Manali sits at roughly 2,050 metres in the Kullu valley, where the Beas river runs past deodar forest and apple orchards. Most visitors see it in two days of crowded sightseeing. It rewards a slower week far more.
When to come
March to June brings warm days, blossom in the orchards and the busiest weekends. July and August are monsoon months — green, dramatic and prone to landslides on the highway, so keep your plans flexible.
September and October are the quietest and, to our eyes, the finest: clear mountain light, cool evenings and thin crowds. December to February brings snow, bonfires and the long white season around the Atal Tunnel.
Getting here
The nearest airport is Kullu–Manali at Bhuntar, about 50 km south, with short flights from Delhi and Chandigarh that are weather-dependent. Most travellers take an overnight Volvo bus or a private car from Delhi — around 12 to 14 hours on the Chandigarh–Mandi highway.
Once you are here, distances are small. Mall Road, Old Manali and Vashisht are all within a few kilometres, and a scooter or a local taxi covers everything you need.
A week worth taking slowly
Spend the first morning walking rather than driving: Hadimba Devi Temple sits in a cedar grove barely a kilometre from Mall Road, and the walk up through the trees is the point of it.
Give a day to Old Manali cafés and the Manalsu bridge, an afternoon to the hot springs at Vashisht, and one early start to Solang Valley before the day crowds arrive. If the pass is open, drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu — a different, drier landscape barely half an hour away.
Keep at least two days with nothing planned. In the hills the weather makes the itinerary anyway.
Practical notes
Carry layers even in summer — evenings drop sharply. Cash is still useful in the smaller villages. Roads above Manali can close briefly after heavy snow or rain, so leave a buffer day before any flight.
If you drive up yourself, remember the last stretch to most hillside properties is narrow and steep. Ask your host before arriving at night.
